Willkommen und Historie – Welcome - Bienvenue

We welcome all people who, like us, are enthusiastic about the charm of old books, and that applies to everyone who visits the antiquarian bookshop at Ahlhausen Castle. Some collect old books as art objects, others for the further expansion of their library, others are interested in science and, for research purposes, search for new insights in old literature or for things that seem to have long since passed away or even been lost and yet could still be found in the old books that we collect and process in libraries and sometimes also offer as antiquarian books - there are many reasons to pursue old books and to stay with them at Ahlhausen Castle...

The Ahlhausen Castle Antiquarian Bookshop emerged from the old library of Ahlhausen Castle in 2012. The history of books in Ahlhausen is much older, because in the Middle Ages the old "Adalhedehuson" was founded by the Imperial Abbey of the Benedictines in Essen-Werden and the monks had given it to the old von Ahlhausen family, who then sold it as their own in 1770 to the Gograf of the region at the High Court in Schwelm, Moritz Bölling. So there have actually always been books in a library in Ahlhausen and even if we don't think that monks would have sat here in the Middle Ages working on handwritten book manuscripts, the fact that the von Ahlhausens had book ambitions that were more focused on nature and agriculture in their library up until the end of the 17th century and that the Böllings family of lawyers used and collected more legal works in their library from the 18th century onwards was clearly evident in the holdings of the old library, which its current owners found in Ahlhausen Castle in 2012 and gradually expanded again.

From all of this, we then founded the Schloss Ahlhausen Antiquarian Bookstore - also to further expand our library at Schloss Ahlhausen - in order to pass on works and knowledge about the old books in historical locations to you.

So welcome...
